The Toshiba Thrive was one of the initial tablets utilizing the Android 3.1 OS, which is an indisputably enhanced version of Honeycomb. This Toshiba tablet has a 23Wh, 2,030 mAh lithium-ion battery, which is can maintain power for a maximum of eleven hours. Although that’s what the manufacturer states, we found that compared to other tablets, the Thrive’s small battery dies fairly rapidly – lasting only six hours and a half hours. Compare this to the iPad, which can run for nearly ten and a half hours on a charge. Even the other Android tablets tested on this site land somewhere in the seven to eight hour range. That said the Thrive uses very little power when it’s hanging out in idle mode, as an example; after two hours and forty five minutes, its battery life fell just over two percent, which is excellent.
Typing on the Android key pad felt routinely easy, with only minimal spelling mistakes recorded over seven days of testing. The rear-facing, 5 mp digicam doesn’t work well in reduced light and movement, which appeared to produce a bit of hue changes. Start up of this Toshiba tablet took around 20 seconds, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Tablet reviewed on this site – they both use the identical 1GHz chip. Following the screen password, the Thrive needed less than two seconds launch and open up Honeycomb.
The Toshiba Thrive, includes plenty of useful apps (not all free) which allows you to be up and working right away. This tablet is a great gift, especially for the “technically challenged”. Although not for everyone, due to its bulkier design and heavier weight, the Thrive will appeal to those that are looking for a tablet that feels a bit more sturdy and allows you to plug almost any connection under the sun, into it.
